The APOE polymorphism is one of the most commonly studied genetic factors in schizophrenia. The data on the association between APOE polymorphism and clinical symptoms of schizophrenia are inconsistent. The aim of the study was to assess whether APOE polymorphism is associated with positive and negative symptom scores, cognitive impairment, and gender in a sample of Hungarian patients with schizophrenia. Genotyping of the APOE polymorphism was performed by polymerase chain reaction in 179 patients with schizophrenia and 183 healthy controls. Negative symptoms, cognitive impairment, and gender were associated with APOE epsilon4 allele status. The epsilon4 allele was positively associated with negative symptoms in male patients with schizophrenia, whereas it was negatively associated with cognitive impairment in both male and female patients with schizophrenia. APOE polymorphism does not affect positive symptoms or cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia. We conclude that APOE epsilon4 allele may be related to vulnerability of male schizophrenia patients for negative symptoms.Nissan to invest £1bn in Sunderland Nissan will spend £1bn building a new manufacturing plant in Sunderland which will create 2,500 jobs and build new models for the first time in the UK since the 1960s. The Japanese carmaker said the new plant would provide jobs for "thousands" when it opens in 2017, bringing production back to the UK for the first time since it closed its plant in 1960. The announcement of a further investment by the £350bn-sized Japanese firm follows its £200m investment in a car parts plant in the north east.
